Visit to Art in Action at Waterperry Gardens, Oxford

16 July 2009

If proof were needed of the popularity of Art in Action, then it was in the lengthy traffic queues waiting to park. However, it was universally agreed that the wait was worth it.

What skill, what talent and what inspiration we saw wherever we turned. Hand-made wallpaper using the original Pugin blocks, wood carving of exceptional quality, beautiful ceramics, stunning sculpture on various scales, paintings in every genre, unbelievable creations in glass, textiles - the list is endless. And all this being produced before our very eyes by the most communicative artists and craftsmen most of us had ever encountered. That having been said the art of Raku remains something of a mystery to some of us!

There were music workshops and recitals as well as numerous informal musical performances and dance. Lectures took place in the Waterperry House ballroom as well as tours of their recently completed frescoes. People were free to wander at will through the gardens which were first laid out when Waterperry was a horticultural college for ladies.

Food outlets were found to be first class and there were numerous retail therapy opportunities in the market marquee.

Thanks must go to Marilyn Fanya and Judy Bennett for organising this event for us and a special mention must be made of our accommodating coach driver from Bicknalls who gave us an extra hour there at the end of the day.
