Visit to the Garrick Club - 22 April 2008

Our visit to the Garrick Club was enlightening on many fronts:

  • The Club owns a superb collection of portraits of theatre notables from the time of David Garrick, many of which were by Johann Zoffany. This collection was purchased by the Club, having been turned down by the National Gallery in its early days.

  • The Bar contained a fascinating collection of portraits of more recent actors, familiar to many of us from our own experiences of stage and screen.

  • AA Milne bequeathed the rights to the Pooh characters to the Club. The sale of these to Disney generated a substantial sum, touchingly called "the Pooh money". This has been used to fund the complete renovation of the building and its furnishings.

  • The Library is a treasure house of theatre memorabilia including all the play bills of Drury Lane and Covent Garden from their inception.

  • Although lady guests are welcomed, the Garrick is still an all male domain!
